The HTC Touch HD

The HTC Touch HD might be the most anticipated gadget of 2008 but Windows Mobile geeks would not be too happy about it. Dubbed to be the iPhone killer, the Touch HD's large 3.8'' and WVGA screen resolution screen might lure consumers. It would definitely be fun and exciting surfing the web on Opera Mobile 9.5. Keeping up with the latest Heroes season wouldn't be a problem as videophiles would drool over the large and beautiful screen.

However, there are certain problems with the Touch HD. These problems are unfortunately major problems that might affect the popularity of the phone. Firstly, the lack of the device's support for various video formats like xvid or divx.

Lately, the market has been flooded with models with great video support (including DivX и XviD) and with large screens. Unfortunately, straight out-of-the–box HD is not one of them. The only clips that plays (MP4 with H.264) have the potential for good quality but are choppy if they are in high resolution (over 640 pixels wide), needed for this screen. To say the least, we were disappointed but never lost hope. We installed Core Player, but nothing changed – we were able to play all types of files but they didn’t run smooth, and the image quality was bad, because of the many artifacts visible. According to HTC, the cause was Core Player's lack of hardware acceleration. So basically you’ll have to rely solely on the built-in player, which has quite limited functionality.

The poor video would let a lot of people down since it is dubbed to be a multimedia device.

Video benchmarks on coreplayer 1.25, default options.

Hmm. I think i might have to think about it twice before buying.

I am just quoting from the world wide web since the Touch HD isn't available yet in my country.
However, I am in no position to judge the video performance of this device unless it is in the palm of my hands. But for now let us just review what others think about this device

A second issue people might have with this device is that the device is just like a white elephant under the sunlight. Again I have not tested this device so let's just read what other people wrote about it.

it’s resistive and you have to rather press it instead of just touch it, but still reacts very well and the difference with the capacitive iPhone screen is insignificant, to the advantage of Apple’s creation. However, it is the apparent winner in the comparison in direct sunlight; the iPhone remains fully usable, and HD turns into a 3.8” mirror.

To be able to take advantage of the convenience and functionality of the World Wide Web on a beautiful 3.8'' screen, we would definitely take the www with us wherever we go(surfing on the go; say in a cab or bus with HSDPA speeds). But the Touch HD would not allow us to just do that.(read incapable).

Another issue we might fret about is the poor camera performance judged by the phonearena people.

When it was announced, HD also sounded like a phone with great camera. Unfortunately this did not prove right during our testing. The interface is minimalistic, and similar to the iPhone’s, .....Even outdoor pictures taken during the day do not have good quality; incorrect exposure, unreal colors and a low detail level are the main issues. Since there’s no flash we won’t even talk about indoor pictures.

Conclusion
The Touch HD looks like a great iPhone killer. However, there are a few setbacks with the phone. I do not however blame HTC for this issues. I as a consumer blames us all since we expect too much from a mobile device nowadays. GPS, five-megapixel camera, wi-fi, browser with flash support, great screen resolution, great design and many more. HTC had blessed us with the great HTC Touch Pro.They have also been manufacturing quality products(like the Touch HD which has a quality build and how they managed to squeeze in so many functions in such a small body(remember it has a 3.8'' wide screen). Not forgetting the quality accessories which are packaged in the box.) Hopefully, there would be future firmware updates for the Touch HD so as to not dissapoint comsumers.

Orb.com vs LogMeIn

I would like to share with you people a few software I had installed on my TyTn II. Orb and LogMeIn offers remote PC access. You can absolutely access your home computer if you are connected to a free wi-fi network when you're out! How slick and a,azing is that. Imagine accessing the thousands of video or audio files you have on your computer in an Internet cafe.

Okay.First one is Orb.com.(http://www.orb.com) This site is specially tailored for people who enjoy entertainment on the go. However, your home computer has to be switched on whenever you want to access any files on it. That might be a disadvantage as electricity prices shows no sign of a downward trajectory. Maybe in a few months due to the shaking and unstable economy. Watch all your videos or listen to all your favourite songs in the palm of your hands. This , in my opinion is a brilliant software given the limited storage space we have on our mobiles. Simply click on the video on the orb.com website and it will start streaming seamlessly on Windows Media Player on your mobile. Now, i bet you can throw away your slingbox already. Not forgetting that you can access your home computer on anything that connects to the World Wide Web. Oh yeah, you don't have to install anything on your mobile. Just your home PC.

QuickPost

LogMeIn. LogMeIn is a software similar to Orb.com just that this software is for people who like to control their home PC from the palm of your hands. For example, LogMeIn allows you to convert videos you plan to convert right from the palm of your hands.Imagine accessing the tons of programs you have on your computer in the palm of your hands. Similarly, you don't need to download anything onto your mobile. Just connect to a network and have the time of your life. This two softwares definitely made my life easier.Imagine.
